The Bridge Literature and Composition Grades 9-11
Jack Hightower In his course the student will continue
their preparation for pre-college composition and essays. The student writer will be given exercises and activities
chosen to help strengthen their writing competencies. Critical reading will be advanced, that is, reading "between
the lines" to know not only what was said, but what was meant and how it will affect your thinking. To do this,
the student will explore their reading habits and sharpen them to accomplish the five necessary skills for critical reading.
The student will explore their ability to have accurate communication-increasing the reserve of recognizable words as the
student reads and listens more carefully and incorporates new words into their verbal communication and writing. The
student will be reading an American Literature Sampler and a British Literature Sampler, to acquaint them with the richness
of the written word in stories, poetry and plays. This course will also review and strengthen organizational skills,
such as, logical reasoning, patterns of organization, paraphrasing, and development and writing of the research paper.
Two-to-three hours per week study time should be scheduled for writing and reading. Class time will be 1 hour and 30
minutes per week. There will be 10 payments of $45 each for the class. Curriculum cost is $35 due with registration.

Basic Essay Writing Grades: 9-10 – Rachel CelsorBasic Essay Writing is a fundamental approach covering 5-paragraph
essays and poetry. The class will review and strengthen organizational skills, such as note taking, brainstorming, outlines,
rough drafts, editing, and logical reasoning. The student will examine, develop and reinforce his skills in writing 5-paragraph
essays, longer essays and 1 basic research paper. Weekly assignments are posted at Basic Structured Writing The student will need to purchase the worksheets ebook, which will cost $20 per year. The student will also
need 2 self-addressed stamped envelopes, a 3-ring binder (2 – 3 inch), 5+ hi-liters, 8 notebook divider tabs, a Bible,
a thesaurus, and a dictionary. Homework must be typed. This is not a literature course; however,
reading from a list of selected authors will be required. A variety of authors are included, such as Charles Dickens,
Catherine Marshall, and Jules Verne. There will be no tests on the reading. Allow approximately four - six hours per
week study time. Class size is limited to 15 students. Class time will be 2 hours per week. There will be 10 payments of $45/each
